New Leaf News
Reincarnation Sets the Bar
Last month we announced that New Leaf Paper’s best seller and North America’s most environmentally sound coated paper stepped a few more rungs up the karma ladder by increasing from 50% to 60% post-consumer waste content. And customers have taken notice! Says Grant of Greenerprinter in Berkeley, CA, “Reincarnation runs far better than any recycled paper out there…and keeps us on the leading edge. It was already the best, and this just made it even better.”
Known for its elegant finish and sharp color reproduction, Reincarnation Matte is still the only matte coated paper made in North America with 100% recycled fiber and bleached without chlorine compounds. So specify Reincarnation Matte on your next print job and join the thousands of customers making a difference one step at a time.
Ciao, ColorGraphics! Primavera Silk Contest Winner
The orders and entries poured in, and we’re thrilled to announce our Primavera Silk Contest winner: ColorGraphics, located right here in San Francisco! Earlier this spring, hundreds of New Leaf Paper customers and fans entered for their chance to win a trip to the Italian countryside for a personal tour of the mill that makes Primavera Silk. Along with our Founder and CEO Jeff Mendelsohn, representatives from ColorGraphics will be heading to Northern Italy to visit the Burgo Group’s Cartiera di Toscolana paper mill on the banks of beautiful Lake Garda.
With its exceptional finish, this bright and elegant paper is a true market leader, offering high print fidelity, competitive pricing and the highest postconsumer waste content of any coated sheet. Primavera Silk offers a triple-coated, smooth finish ideal for magazines and photographs, not to mention for our winners to document memories of Italy!
New Pricing on Lightweight Coated Papers

Success Story: Barlean’s Organic Oils
The success of New Leaf Paper is the result of decisions small and large made every day by our customers. This month, the spotlight is on Barlean’s, a fourth generation, family-owned company with roots in the fishing industry, and the country’s premier manufacturer of organic flaxseed oils. Recently named a Green 100 Company by Healthy Living Magazine, Barlean’s made the switch to New Leaf Paper’s Harmony and Primavera Silk for all their marketing materials.
Andreas Koch, Barlean’s Marketing Director, explained their shift this way: “Barlean’s is stepping up its eco-commitment where ever possible, though the biggest hurdles are usually costs. Not with New Leaf Paper — they actually matched our annual conventional paper prices. Barlean’s will now save 11,737 pounds of solid waste and 238 full grown trees this year without adding a penny. Sustainably smart AND cost-effective, partnering with New Leaf brings new meaning to ‘saving green’!”
Caution: Anti-Dumping on Chinese Paper Imports
The U.S. Department of Commerce recently issued its preliminary antidumping (AD) determinations that imports of certain coated paper from China and Indonesia are being sold at less than normal value in the U.S. As a result, Commerce imposed preliminary AD duties ranging from 30.82 to 135.8 percent on imports from China and 10.62 percent on imports from Indonesia. The paper covered by the investigations is coated paper suitable for high-quality print graphics using sheet-fed presses with a GE brightness rating of 80 or higher and weighing up to 340 g/m2. Reincarnation now 60% PCW!
Our track record of innovation and environmental leadership continues! By evolving Reincarnation Matte from 50% PCW to 60% PCW, New Leaf Paper delivers the most environmentally sound paper made in North America. In addition, Reincarnation is still the only matte coated paper made in North America with 100% recycled fiber and bleached without the use of chlorine compounds. It is known for its elegant finish, sharp color reproduction and unmatched environmental specifications. Now you have that much more reason to specify Reincarnation Matte on your next print job!
Small Steps and Big Leaps
Over ten years ago, New Leaf took a large step – more like a leap – to bring New Leaf Reincarnation to market. At the time, most recycled coated papers had 10% post-consumer recycled content. Reincarnation launched in 1999 with 100% recycled content, 50% post-consumer waste, processed chlorine free. This was not an easy feat. Making high quality coated paper with high-post consumer waste content is challenging.
Today, we are very excited to take another step – a relatively small step – to bring Reincarnation from 50% to 60% post-consumer waste content. That may not sound like much, but over the course of one year, it will save an additional:
7762 fully grown trees
3,554,158 gallons of water
2,460 million BTU’s of energy
215,788 pounds of solid waste
737,957 lbs of greenhouse gases.
To put this in perspective, this is a greater environmental benefit than from our entire first year’s sales of Reincarnation.
Big leaps are exciting. Major breakthroughs and product innovations are essential to creating a sustainable world. That said, the countless small steps of building our values into every decision we make ultimately drives lasting change. These small steps make the occasional big leap possible. New Leaf Reincarnation succeeded because thousands of companies made the small step to use the best environmentally responsible paper. The knowledge that these companies share our values and build them into their purchasing criteria, empowered New Leaf to make additional leaps, and bring our product innovation to other markets like trade book and gloss coated paper.
Going from 50% to 60% post-consumer waste is a relatively small step. We made this small step because it fits with our values. We figured out how to increase the post-consumer content without affecting the quality of the sheet, and we did it. We send our gratitude to the thousands of New Leaf Reincarnation customers – we are making a difference. If you have never used Reincarnation, it’s a small step with a big impact. Please join us.

New Leaf Paper sees education as part of our core mission and our strategic advantage in the marketplace. We educate our customers on our vision of a sustainable paper industry which we call “Pulp Non-Fiction.” We help people understand the importance of using post-consumer recycled products in this context, so that they understand rather than simply memorize it. We spread our message through speaking engagements, presentations, webinars and the educational content on our newly relaunched website. We have an exciting webinar line up to come throughout the balance of the year, so keep an eye out for them as well as enjoy past webinars that have been posted on our site. Dispelling Myths: Recycled vs. Virgin Fiber
Susan Kinsella, the Executive Director of Conservatree, presented a phenomenal webinar on March 9th to dispel many of the myths that exist about recycled vs. virgin fiber. This first in an ongoing series of webinars, was extremely well attended and rich with insights. Among the more startling facts was that 1 ton of virgin kraft pulp takes up to 4.4 tons of fresh trees – which translates into a fairly low material efficiency rate of 23%. By contrast, 1 ton of kraft deinked pulp (for recycled paper) requires only 1.4 tons of recovered pulp – a 71% material efficiency rate. In short, there is a great deal of advantage to using recycled paper and it goes a long way in preventing the harvesting of fresh trees.
